Using a USB input signal and showing just fine (getting signal) in Mac System Preferences. Updated Audacity to 2.1.2 and checked input and output settings are set (from USB input device) and send out to (internal speakers.) When I check “start monitoring” for the input, nothing happens. Any ideas.

You can ignore listening or the speaker setting for a while. Recording in Audacity and listening are two completely separate jobs. Trying to troubleshoot both at once will just be confusing.
So the goal is to set monitoring and watch for a bouncing sound meter. Do you get that?
It’s good to find out a lot more detail. Which USB device? Which computer?
What’s the eventual goal? AudioBook Reading? Overdubbing a hit song?
