Is there an old version of Audacity I can download to run on an old Mac running on OS 10.11.6. It’s an old laptop which won’t run a newer version of OS

However, I do not know which version works best with OS X 10.11. if your computer does not allow newer OS versions, it must be really old, a quick look on Mactracker showed me that it must be a MacBook / Air / Pro from 2009 or earlier…
Maybe you could consider to install a Linux OS on that machine? Some time ago I did this with a white MacBook from 2006 and Linux Mint 21 “Vanessa”. This MacBook is already 64bit capable, but the EFI is 32bit only - so the installation required additional steps - I can advise you, if you like. This MacBook now works for a family of refugees.
Audacity 3.7 should be compatible with 10.11.6, if you download the intel-specific dmg from Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS
