Line in option disappeared

Hi, I use Audacity to convert old LPs to CDs. Until recently everything worked fine, using an external sound card connected to my Windows 10 computer, using the line in option in Audacity for recording.
Then, all of a sudden, when I wanted to continue, the line in was not offered anymore and can not be found in the sound systems of Windows.
I bought a new sound card (behringer UCA222) - the same!
What baffles me most: I used my second computer, installed Audacity - the same!
Any ideas?
Many thanks for you help.

As you may see from my username, I do not deal with Windows normally. But to me, it seems that you changed something in the sound settings of your Win10 machine - see “systemsettings → Sound” or similar.

When you use an external device as your Behringer UCA222, you need to see in system settings and in Audacity whether you find a device which includes something like"USB" in the name.

I do not understand what exactly happened with your “second computer”; to what effect does “the same” refer to?

Thanks for your answer.
Yes, I see something with USB… which disappears when I unplug the external device. I will have to check whether this now can be used as “line in”.
Second computer: everything looks the same, no line in option offered, although this was a “fresh” installation of Audacity.
Will keep you informed.

Does the “second computer” have a physical line-in port…? Line-in refers to a physical connection (usually a 3,5mm round plug like they are used for headphone connectors.

You need to route your sound through the Behringer device which you connect with the USB port at the computer. This has nothing to do with “line-in”. And you need to switch in the Audacity settings to the USB device.

Well, I think I know what happened!

  • My old external sound card seems to be corrupt and does not work properly anymore! (I always had in the Audacity drop-down menu an option “line in”, which then disappeared, probably because this card does not function properly anymore)
  • Both, the new and the old device showed up in the Audacity drop down menu (and other places) not as “line in” anymore, but strangely enough as “Mikrofon (USB Audio CODEC)”. Using this as recording device I could proceed as usual!
  • First, I only could record in mono, although Audacity was set to stereo! Reason was, Windows had selected in the properties of the new device “1 channel” (to change: right click on the speaker symbol bottom right, select your device, properties, further properties, go to tab “expanded” and there select the correct channel setup!)

What do we learn, if somebody is confronted with similar problems?

  • External devices can break!
  • If you are losing something like “line in”, plug and unplug your external device and see what appears and disappears (always refresh the audio components!). With this you should try to work, even if the given name seems to be strange.

mac-christian, thanks for your hints!
