leveling voices

What is the recommended method - in addition to manually adjusting the voice levels - for creating a nice, even sound among all voices? I know leveler is available with a little digging, but I’m interested in other ideas and I want to avoid any distortion…

LevelSpeech2.ny , (old school “leveller” effect was only fit for deliberate distortion).
