Out of nowhere, last night, my Audacity acted up, delaying the voice after I recorded a file. I started researching this, and the solutions were a bit over my head and I didn’t understand. Currently my buffer length is set to 100 and my latency to -130. I never touched anything, or made any changes. It was very frustrating. I restarted my computer and it went back to normal. Yay. But today I had a live recorded session (on Microsoft Teams) and everything was going great. All of a sudden, at the end, the same thing started to happen and some of my recording was actually cut off because I stopped it when I thought I finished it, but due to the lag it wasn’t finished. Luckily I was able to catch this and fix this and deliver a good file. But what the heck is going on? Why the sudden onset of this problem? Please don’t tell me to get out of MME, because my computer doesn’t like it when I do that, and there are other problems. Please don’t tell me I have to upgrade Audacity. I have an old version and hear that there are all sorts of issues with the upgrades, and I don’t want to lose all of my macros and key strokes. I have Audacity 3.3.3 and really like it. I’d LOVE some insight into this sudden problem. Thanks.
Make sure there is no other software getting between the microphone and Audacity. The first thing I would recommend disabling is “sound enhancement”. You can find plenty of posts here about that by searching. Also, if Teams, Zoom, or some other meeting software is installed they will have their own version of “sound enhancement” that can kick in. A third thing to look for is another program that uses the microphone like Alexa.
I appreciate you getting back to me, but I’m really not sure what you mean when you say other software getting in the way. Is that another device running somewhere? Like my iPhone or iPad? Or is that some other software that might be open on my desktop computer? I guess I didn’t understand that at all. Right now everything seems to be OK. But I was just curious why all of a sudden it happened. I will take a look at sound enhancement. I don’t know what that is either but at least you said I could find some answers here.
I mean other software on your computer that also accesses your microphones.
A good example of that is Co-Pilot. It is so baked into Windows now, people forget that it is there. If it has access to your microphone – so you can ask it questions – it can get in the way of recording audio.
