Labels become unusable after cmd+N

When inserting labels with cmd+B and typing in them, sometimes I accidentally type cmd+N. This brings up a new window. When I dismiss the new window, I can no longer type in the label field I was working in. I can delete it and make a new label, but I can’t type in the new one, either.

I am able to paste some text into the label field, after which I can continue working in it.

MacOS 13.6.2 (22G320)

I make labels by first selecting the label text and then pasting it using Command-Option-V

I use them for marking each word in a book narration file. I listen for each word and type it.
