What exactly are you trying to do?
Multi-track recording in Audacity can be tricky and often impossible.
If you want to import and mix multiple tracks use File → Import rather than File-Open. When you play in Audacity or export the tracks will be mixed.
Or if you want to export surround sound or other multi-track, you can select Custom Mapping in the export dialog window.
Unless something has changed, Audacity itself won’t play in surround sound. You have to export to hear it.
Note that mixing is done by summation (analog mixers are built-around summing amplifiers). So to prevent clipping (distortion) you normally have to reduce the volume of the tracks before exporting. Unfortunately, unlike analog mixers or full DAWs, Audacity doesn’t have a master volume control.
