Issue recording a Spotify Track to Macbook

Hello, can anyone help pls? I am trying, for the first time, to record a Spotify track in Audacity. I play the track on Spotify and hit the record button on Audacity. When I play the recording back on Audacity, there is no recording of the track. On Audio Settings on Audacity, the Recording Device is set to Macbook Pro Microphone; there are no other drop down options. Thanks

macOS does not allow you to redirect sound in the way you want natively.

Depending on what macOS you use, you need either “Soundflower” or “BlackHole” to do what you want. BlackHole is the newer software and works for sure with macOS 14 “Monterey” and later, I do not know what is the oldest supported macOS version.

But why do you not use other possibilities to get your sounds off Youtube? For example, you could use “JDownloader 2”. It does not need “real time” to download the sound (and video).

Many many thanks for this prompt response; I just prefer to use Spotify as the source as all my music, playlists etc are set up there. I will give Blackhole a go.

Oh sorry, I thought / read that you wrote Youtube, not Spotify…

It looks like you need to set up a virtual audio device to record system audio. Try using a tool like BlackHole or Soundflower to route Spotify’s audio to Audacity. After installing, set both Spotify and Audacity to use the virtual audio device. This should allow Audacity to capture the Spotify track. Let me know if you need more details on setting this up!

Many thanks. I have since kinda cheated and used Spotify Downloader to get to MP3 format.
