Is there a way to record vocals WITH effects while you record?

When recording a song and singing the vocals, effects are often essential to the singer helping them “feel”… Is there a way to record a vocal, WITH the effects being heard as they record?.. Thanks in advance for any information.

Not with Audacity. You could get a USB mixer with a reverb effect and record from that. Also, there may be third party software that could be employed, although I can’t think of anything in particular.

Not with Audacity’s effects. You would need to apply the effects outside of Audacity.

Example (any platform): you could connect your mic to a hardware vocal effect processor, then record the output from the effect processor.

Example (Linux): You could use Jack Audio system to route the audio signal through a stand-alone effect and then to Audacity (the recording will include the effect), or route the audio to Audacity directly, and to the output port via an effect (Audacity records without the effect (“dry”) but you hear it being recorded with the effect.

Example (Windows): You may be able to use a stand-alone “voice changer” effect, and record the output of the effect in Audacity by configuring Audacity to record sounds that are playing on the computer (Tutorial - Recording audio playing on the computer - Audacity Manual).

Sometimes thy call this “confidence reverb”.

IMO, this is the best solution. Even without effects it’s usually best if you can monitor “directly” with hardware because when you go through the computer you get latency (delay). Most effects add more latency… It gets difficult to get the latency down to where it’s unnoticeable. Even without effects it can sometimes be a challenge.

A DAW application can apply effects while recording, or just to the monitoring path. Or you can record a “clean” track and one with effects, etc. And most DAWs support ASIO drivers for low-latency so if you have hardware that supports ASIO that can help.

But direct hardware monitoring can still prevent a lot of headaches.
