I haven’t touched Audacity for months, just now I downloaded it back, and it’s utterly unusable.
Maximizing the window, the UI is stuck at old resolution, with the new one rendering on top.
I thought, “Okay so the app is broken on maximized window, guess I’ll just work with smaller window”, but it’s actually far worse.
This account is new, I can’t post more images, but basically…
The UI rendering doesn’t get updated when I maximizing the window, recording audio, or even modifying a clip. It only does it when I change the size of the window.
There are probably more ways to force update the UI, but that’s kind of irrelevant, I’m not going to do audio editing with a freezing window.
Audacity 3.7.4 was out for like a week, and KDE 6.4 is even newer, so I’m not sure who’s to blame here, it can even be a Nvidia issue;
One thing to note though, despite it breaks on both Flathub and Fedora dnf version of the app, the Ubuntu Appimage works perfectly fine, so that’s what I’m going for today.
Anyway, that’s my report. Thanks for reading.

I feel your pain. I’m using mint 21.3, and installed Audacity 2.4.2 from the distro. It was working perfectly fine for my rudimentary use, but I needed to try something new from the effects list. That didn’t seem to fulfill my need, and so I tried to use Help, which wasn’t included in the distro. Came to Audacity website to find the latest version is 3.7.4, and the only Help download is 3.7.something. I downloaded it, but haven’t used it, but saved it for use after upgrading. It didn’t include help files. I tried flatpak to replace (after "removing " 2.4.2 from pkg manager) which installed 3.7.4 - when I opened it the VU meter was already registering in the pinned-to-the-red-wall status. I recorded a couple seconds and listened. It was just a horrible screech. I tried changing the input, and the recording volume, with no luck. I removed that version, and went back to the distro’s version 2.4.2. That too is now hosed in the same way. I rebooted- no change. I came here and will post my own tale of woe. All this for the need of some documentation, and it killed the app. To better days!
Hi,
I’m using Mint 21.3 too with the AppImage of 3.7.4. I’ve found it OK for my needs but my use case may well be different from your own. If you revert to older versions (3.3.3 was really good IMHO) you have to clear out the settings left over from any previous install. There are numerous posts on this elsewhere.
My Plan B is to use Ocenaudio too, especially for the recording part of the process.
I hope that helps a bit (or a lot)

It’s this part: “you have to clear out the settings left over from any previous install.” I’ve heard that from answers to questions concerning WINE as well, but I don’t know how to ensure that goal is met. I understand that different programs put their stuff in many places in the filesystem with no roadmap to them, and no list of pieces parts is given out with what to search for.
I’ve also read that AppImages have their own issues. perhaps I’ll try it.
Thanks for your response!
Start with Tools > Reset Configuration within Audacity. If that doesn’t work, delete the .audacity-data folder in your home folder. N.B. the folder is hidden by default so you have to Show Hidden Files first.
The only issue I’ve had with AppImages is them being so damn big.

I apologize for hijacking the post. I hope EviTRea gets some help, if it’s still needed. Please check out the original post, and help if you can.
For my part, I used Appimage Audacity 3.3.3 which still had noise in the red zone with nothing plugged in or playing. Found out that the built in mic on the laptop is noisy, and it could be turned off. That was 90% of the problem. Then I could use amplify to get some more volume overall, which got me enough to be usable. ----> Thanks, guys
I didn’t mean settings left over within audacity, but rather in the OS itself. Within the app, especially with appimage, it looks like the OS doesn’t get contaminated. WINE however, injects itself within the OS at several places without a roadmap to follow in cleaning up at removal time.
At least for now I won’t have that problem - yesterday, I did a clean upgrade to 22.1, so I hope to have learned my lessons.
