Input Streaming WMA?

Read the tutorial concerning Recording audio playing on the computer http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html

Followed the instructions “To import additional types of audio file or extract audio from video files, download and install FFmpeg, then import the file. FFmpeg can also extract audio from the individual VOB files stored on unencrypted DVDs.”

Put the FFMpeg library files in the FFMpeg folder of Audacity portable 2.0.3

Tried to play a WMA stream but got error message

Took a screen capture shot of error message and saved to a doc file but was unable to paste the screen capture here.

If someone will tell me how will try to add.

Appreciate any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong.

Thanks

Ken

We can’t post Word for Windows documents because only the people blessed with Word for Windows or Microsoft Office can see them. Paste your capture into Microsoft Paint and then save it as a JPG or PNG file. Post that.

Sometimes you can reset Audacity preferences from 32-floating to 16-bit and it will start working.

Edit > Preferences > Quality.

In this case, you didn’t need the FFMpeg. That’s only if you already have a stand-alone music or sound file you want Audacity to open and the software isn’t already inside Audacity.

Here is the support address for Audacity Portable:
http://portableapps.com/support/audacity_portable .

It’s a different project to ours and we have no idea how it differs from Audacity.

Gale

Koz,

Thanks for the Paint tip.

Output Error Message for WMA Stream.jpg

If you have downloaded Audacity Portable from
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable

you need to ask on
http://portableapps.com/support/audacity_portable .

Audacity Portable is nothing to do with Audacity and we will not on principle answer questions for that project.

If you wish to transfer Audacity between computers, please use Audacity downloaded from us http://audacityteam.org/download/windows and follow these steps to create a “Portable Settings” folder
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Portable_Audacity.

Audacity cannot directly open MMS or any other live streams.

If you want to record a stream, play it in VLC then record it from stereo mix or similar (your Audacity recording device is currently not set to stereo mix). Please see here to fix that http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html .

You won’t be able to play any audio at the moment because the output device in Audacity Device Toolbar is empty. You will have to re-enable a sound playback device in Windows “Sound” (in the Control Panel) to fix that.

Please do not post any more questions here without confirming you are using Audacity supplied by us. Thanks for your co-operation.

Gale

Gale,

Thanks for your detailed explanation and links.

Will download from your site and follow all the instructions.

“If you want to record a stream, play it in VLC then record it from stereo mix or similar” The test audio record was recorded with VLC.

“Please do not post any more questions here without confirming you are using Audacity supplied by us.” How do you want me to do this? Is there a build number or some type of identification tag on the installed software so you know your software has not been modified?

Thanks again for your help

Ken

Yes I saw VLC-record in the track name. So assuming you know how to save a stream to a file in VLC, can you do without stereo mix recording in Audacity, or are you still stuck on that? I would add that transcoding the stream in real time to a file format (which is what I assume VLC does) may not give as good quality as recording it with Audacity and then encoding it to a format.

I don’t know without downloading Audacity Portable, but we’ll trust you.

If our portable solution works for you and you say you’re using Audacity from http://audacityteam.org/ , that’s more than good enough.

Sorry to be firm about Audacity Portable, but we don’t know the details of how or if they modify Audacity and can’t offer solutions for any bugs in its portable support or any other issues they state on their site.

Gale,

“Sorry to be firm about Audacity Portable, but we don’t know the details of how or if they modify Audacity and can’t offer solutions for any bugs in its portable support or any other issues they state on their site.”

No problem. I thought everything was the same only that they had made it easier for non techies like me to install LAME and other plug-ins.

My problem making a "portable Audacity " is where to put LAME?

FAQ “How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?” http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#lame only mentions the non portable location “Follow the Setup instructions to install LAME for Audacity, making sure not to change the offered installation location of “C:Program FilesLame for Audacity” (or “C:Program Files (x86)Lame for Audacity” on a 64-bit version of Windows).”

“Lame Installation” http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Lame_Installation is the same.

Thanks again for your help.

Please don’t duplicate your posts. It wastes time and causes confusion because everyone loses track of who said what where
I answered your question in your other post: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/mp3-patents-lame-install-for-portable-audacity/28553/4
