I'm having problems getting Audacity to work

For some reason when I record the first track it works perfect, but it I try to record another track it won’t let me I think it’s something to do with the a driver but have no idea how to fix it anyone of suggestions I am running Windows 10

Just for grins: Try both the “R” key and then try the “Shift+R” keys. One starts a fresh, new recording and the other should append a recording at the end of the first recording. Do they both fail?

What’s the microphone, and/or what are you recording? If your sound source fails or cuts out, Audacity may not want to go into record.

Doing that did help but still I have to keep switching back and forth between my audio drivers to record and playback.
Right now my in and out settings are set to Out Speaker M-Audio M-Track 2x2
And In Line 1/2 M-Audio M-Track 2x2
I have to keep switching to Out Speaker High Definition Audio Device in order for it to work I didn’t have to do that with the same software but on a laptop trying to install it on my PC now

My grandson is writing songs guitar and vocals.
