I can’t hear myself while recording

When updating my audacity software to 3.6, (and then subsequent updates through 3.6.4) I can no longer hear myself while I record. It records just fine, but I have to leave one of my headphones off to hear myself.

This happened once before, and I ended up going back to an old version. But I just want to know how to fix it.

And please don’t tell me to turn on “Enable input monitoring” because there is a huge delay.

My mic is at the correct volume, it is plugged into my microphone, I can hear playbacks in my headphones, all other sound works in my headphones. It is recording fine. But it’s just silence while I record.

What microphone are you using? Does it have a headphone jack for zero-latency monitoring?

I have a blue yeti - but I haven’t changed anything except updating the software, and I’ve been able to hear myself before. It’s like every other big software update I can’t hear myself and I have no idea why.

Does Blue Yeti have a support forum? Someone there might have some insights.

It’s not the microphone. It’s recording just fine. I just can’t hear myself WHILE I am recording, and the only thing that is different is updating the software.

Are you plugging the headphones into the microphone?

Audacity has never been able to supply zero-latency monitoring.

Try turning off “Enable Input Monitoring”. As I recall, that setting has sometimes caused microphones with a headphone jack from supplying zero-latency monitoring.

Yes, my headphones are plugged into my mic
I do not put “Enable Input Monitoring” because there is a delay

I feel like you didn’t read my entire post.

Did you buy an actual “Blue” yeti?

I think that’s a relatively recent product.

So your headphones still work for listing to playback and other sound work. Just not you in real time.

The Yeti has no software or other drivers, so that’s not it.

Do you use other apps or software that use sound? Skype, Zoom, Meetings, Multi-Player Games?

So you have been able to work around this by “backing up” the Audacity versions? Which one worked last?

At the risk of digging up an old trope, did you restart your Mac? Because you know we’re going to ask you that?

Are you in the middle of a book?

Blow that out a little bit. All updates don’t do this? So you hit an update that failed, backed up, and then advanced forward two updates at the next version?

Koz

Correct. It’s like, every two or three updates it goes away, then it takes like 4-5 updates and it’s back. I don’t know if they take away the capability or what, but I hate having to wear my headphones off one ear

It’s not blue, but yes it’s that brand. My headphones still playback my recordings and I can hear other computer sounds. I don’t remember the last version. I only use this Mac to record, so I haven’t tried anything else.

Yes I’ve tried restarting my Mac

Direct monitoring is totally a hardware feature of the Yeti. The computer only has to provide USB power (and an optional backing-track). If it’s not working the mic (or headphones) are broken.
