How to split multiple audio tracks at once to add music

Hi all, hopefully I explain this right, using iMac if that makes a difference- these are example times for the basis of my question.

So, I have a Podcast recording, with THREE voice tracks totalling 60 seconds.

I want to add 2 music tracks, but I want to add them after 20 seconds of talking and 40 seconds, and I want to play each of them for 10 seconds - but I don’t want them to play over the 3 spoken podcast tracks, they will be solo/separate audio.

So, in my head I need to do the following:

  • Select track number 1, go to 20 seconds - SPLIT track, move this split track (Audio 2) to 30 seconds mark

  • Select track number 2, go to 20 seconds - SPLIT track, move this split track (Audio 2) to 30 seconds mark

  • Select track number 3, go to 20 seconds - SPLIT track, move this split track (Audio 2) to 30 seconds mark

  • Import in first music track (so now track number 4), move this to the 20 second mark to play for 10 seconds, filling the 10 second void creating from steps above.

  • Select track number 1 audio 2, go to (now) 50 seconds - SPLIT track, move this new Audio 3 to 60 second mark

  • Select track number 2 audio 2, go to (now) 50 seconds - SPLIT track, move this new Audio 3 to 60 second mark

  • Select track number 3 audio 2, go to (now) 50 seconds - SPLIT track, move this new Audio 3 to 60 second mark

  • Import second music track (now track number 5) move this to the 50 second mark and play for 10 seconds, filling the 10 second void created from the above.

All of this seems a lot of steps for something so simple. Is there a way to make the two main splitting steps more streamline, and split them all at once, in this case at 20 and 50 seconds??

If you have a 90 minute podcast and 3/4/5+ audio to add in like this, that will be a very slow process.

Thanks

Dony

If the music and speech could overlap at any point, then you should use AutoDuck on the music, so the speech can always be understood … Auto Duck - Audacity Manual

BTW, Batch-processing in Audacity is called “Macros” …
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/macros.html
If you had many such podcasts the same editing can be applied to all of them via a macro : (quicker & consistent ) .

Like, if I get this right, you’re trying to add a short jingle in between the talking segments, yes? All you need to do is open a new audacity track with the separator music, and copy it.

Add your music track(s) into the main project file, and paste the music where it belongs.

If you want ALL the other lines to move when you do that, turn on the “Sync-Lock Tracks” option. If you need to move one track’s contents independently, then turn Sync-Lock off.

If I understand what you’re trying to do, it should be a lot easier than your current method.

So…

  1. Sync-lock tracks.
  2. Insert Silence at the 20-sec mark (will populate to all tracks) and again at 50.
3.Turn off Sync-lock, create your music tracks and drop your jingle on them.

Done.

Hey thanks for that, it sort of worked but not fully what I need. The jingles as you say, I still need a bit of fade in and out, and also some of the audio will play quietly in the background whilst speaking goes on, so that solution doesn’t suit for my scenario. See image below as a quick example of me messing around so show what I mean…

Btw, whilst you’re looking at the screenshot. How the hell do I select only audio 2 from each of the track lines if I wanted to move just those parts? I’ve tried holding shift and clicking, control/command and clicking - something so simple seems to be beating me lol

Fade In/Fade out Effect at the beginnings/ends of the music, and select the parts you want fully silent and use “generate silence.”

As for the selection of Audio 2: I THINK grab it by the title bar, with your mouse, but I don’t know. I’m using an older, custom compiled version of audacity and I don’t have/use splits like that. I just paste into the existing track. It’s easier.

Also: Please ignore the fact that my Audacity is green - I simply customized the colors.

God dammit that is so much easier, just add in silence to all the tracks and no need to split them!

Yup! Now if you’re adjusting a WHOLE BUNCH of stuff over like an hour, then the splits are handy.
But for short stuff? Just add/trim the silences. ; )

haha there will be maybe 4/5 bits of audio going in, but most of it will be running in the background anyway, there won’t really be any periods of silence, I just wanted to know HOW to do it. Thanks again.
