A sillly question but I am struggling to do this? I am playin a clip, pausing at the exact position where I want to split the clip (I have multiple clips on timeline), and now I want to split it HERE. How to do this?
I cannot split while in pause, when I stop playhead disapears. I am stuck.
Should be very simple but I don’t know how to do this.
Try Edit > Audio Clips > Split, or Ctrl+I shortcut.
If you are using a Mac, you can also click on the clip where you want to make the split and a menu comes up that lets you choose “Split Click”. You can also use ⌘I.
You didn’t specify which system Windows, Mac or version of Audacity you are using. Since I only know Windows and I’m on version 3.7.7 I’ll give you the default shortcuts I use.
If you are playing the track, press the “X” key. This will stop playing and leave the cursor right where you stopped and then you can use “Ctrl+I” to split the track. You can also use the “X” key to start the play. Use the spacebar if you want to start back at the beginning of the track.
If you did press the “P” key to pause the play, you can still press the “X” key to set the cursor.

When I press “stop” i am loosing the position where the cut was supposed to be.

WOW! I did not know that there is some kind of a cursor. IMHO this behavior should be default for spacebar - the one with the “X” key. The “spacebar method” should be disabled. It is weird anyway - to jump to beginning of the clip when you stopped playing. It would be ok by itself but when any action requires you to stop playing completely than stopping resetting the playhead becomes less sense.
You can go to Edit>Preferences and change the shortcut for the space bar to do what the “X” key is doing.
I often need to mark a boundary for an effect that I can snap to and don’t really need to split a clip. I press Ctrl+M to put a label at the current playhead location. You can also do this to mark a location (that you can snap to later) where you want to split a clip. Plus, you can make notes in the label as to why you wanted to mark that location.
