How to shorten decay of recorded bass notes?

We are using a uke bass in place of an upright bass for folk and bluegrass music recordings. Upright is so hard to record without the appropriate mic set ups.

Anyway, the uke bass sounds very close to an upright EXCEPT the length of the decay on the uke is very long. Does Audacity have a tool to shorten the decay for each note to make it sound more like an upright? The only option I can think of is using the envelope tool on each and every note, but that’s a lot of work!

Thanks!

I assume you have a separate bass track so no other instruments or vocals are messed up?

You can try the Noise Gate. You’ll have to experiment with the time and level reduction settings because you don’t want it to suddenly mute.

Dynamic range expander, e,g, the free version of Couture. (IMO 3x)

[A bit off topic] Maybe old school solution of a bit of foam under strings at bridge? Not sure how it works with rubbery strings. I upgraded my strings to browns which sounded better but caused fret buzz. Switched to a mini bass in the end  HTH
