I’m trying to create a speaker test audio file. So I want it to only play left at one part, and then only right at another part.
I can see how to adjust the playback rather plainly, but how do I record it so that it plays that way automatically?

The easiest way is to create two tracks in Audacity.
Use the Pan slider (http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/audio_tracks.html#pan) to pan one track to the left and the other to the right.
When you “export” to create a normal audio file, the tracks will be “mixed” to create a single stereo track.
Oh, ok. Hadn’t thought to do that. Thanks.
This started out life as a single mono microphone track. Everything else happened in Audacity post production.
