How to paste a sound directly from computer files into an empty spot on a track?

I use Audacity to edit my ttrpg games and post them, and I use a lot of sound effects every time a sword slashes or a spell is cast, and every time I add A sound from the files on my computer it makes that sound clip have it’s own track. I then need to manually drag that file to it’s desired space.

I’d love to be able to copy a file from my files folder, then paste it directly where I wish in an empty “sound effect” track. Is this possible? I apologize if this is some beginner stuff and im talking out of my ass, or this is common knowledge, I am very new to editing!

Here’s a work around.

Import all of your sound effect clips. Line them up on one track. To add a sound effect at a specific point, copy the the clip from the track with all the sound effect clips, click in your working sound effect track where you want the effect to be, then Paste.
