How to Insert Time Intervals of Silence

Audacity 2.0.6 on Win 7 HPE

I tried to find this in FAQ, in Audacity Help, and I searched here, but have not yet found my answer. It is probably something very simple to most of you, but my experience with Audacity is occasional and limited to tasks at hand, not exercising all the features of the software.

I am creating a sound track from bits of text-to-speech .wav files. The objective is to make the track sound like a robotic voice; therefore the lack of contextual intonation is a plus. In order to get the pace correct, I need to cut some time segments out in places and add some in in others. I know how to cut the time out, but I don’t know how to add any. There is no Insert function that I can find in the Menu.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and gratefully received.

There are several ways to do that:

  1. Click on the track where you want to insert silence, then from the Generate menu, select “Silence”. Enter the time duration for the silence, and click on the OK button.

  2. Copy some silence from an existing track, or generate some silence and copy it, then click on the track where you want to insert the silence and paste the copied silence. This can be a very quick method if you use the keyboard shortcuts “Ctrl+C” to copy, and “Ctrl+V” to paste.

  3. “Split” the audio track into short snippets, (“Ctrl+I” or “Edit menu > Clip Boundaries > Split” Audacity Manual), then position the snippets either by cutting and pasting, of by dragging with the Time Shift tool.

Thanks, Steve!

I must have missed the Generate>Silence menu option. I’ll try to be more careful.

Again, thank you for the help.
