how to add silence before beginning of a track [SOLVED]

I apologize in advance for this probably being too simple to ask. I did try to figure it out from the FAQ and the manual, but I can’t get it to work, and I need to finish this by tomorrow… I mean later today. I would really appreciate some help.

I’m on Windows 8.1 with Audacity 2.0.5.

I’m trying to mix 2 files, one with music, one with spoken voice. I wanted the spoken voice to start before the music. First I tried importing both files and using the Time Shift tool to move the music forward a few secs. I couldn’t get it to work. I always got the sign with the slash through it when I tried to move it. So I tried making a separate project for the music file and Time Shifting it forward. That worked, except, as soon as I exported it out so I could bring it into the main project, the exported file didn’t have the added seconds in it. I tried it twice, but it did the same thing each time. How can I add a few seconds of silence at the beginning of the music so that it stays instead of getting deleted?

I apologize again that this is probably very simple. I’m just out of time to figure it out on my own and I can’t find this in the FAQ or manual.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

Playback needs to be stopped. I’m guessing that playback was just paused. Try clicking the Stop button, then try the Time Shift tool.

Thanks. That must have been it. -Is.
