I’m used to recording with an 8-track compact flash recorder by Fostex, so I was wondering how many tracks can one record with Audacity? Can you do 16 tracks and up? Do some technical problems begin to occur once you reach a certain number of tracks?

16 single mono audio channels, but that’s not the trick. Audacity will record 16 tracks from one sound device. Most devices provide two tracks of audio and then appear like a second device to get the next two. Audacity will not handle more than one device and operating systems will not handle more than one of any single version of Audacity.

you need to have good hardware to do lots of tracks. i have only a basic computer and the inbuilt sound card and if i do more than eight mono tracks i start to get bad latency issues. ie the track i record gradually slows down making it almost impossible to re allign with other tracks without cutting and pasting parts of the track which have fallen out of time. I know some people do not have this problem but this is my experience.
