How do I remove buzzing from VHS tape recording

I have converted an old VHS to digital and the sound quality is really bad. I can remove the audio from the video and import it into Audacity with no problem. The problem lies in what to do next.

I need to remove the buzzing and bring the audio out. How do I do this?

I really am very new to this, I don’t understand audio principals, and I don’t know what I need to do to clean it up.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The buzzing is probably mains hum. Try Steve’s de-hum plugin …

If the buzzing is not mains-hum harmonics, try Audacity’s spectral-editing tools …

If there only a few mains-hum harmonics you can remove them individually with spectral editing tools, (rather than the hum-remover plugin) [100Hz-200Hz only] de-hum begins ~8sec.flac
