High buzzing sound when listening to recorded DJ set

Hi all,

I’m very new to all of this: I’ve bought a pioneer DDJ FLX4 DJ controller and an iRig stream to record my DJ sets (I only use streaming services as my music library at the moment hence the iRig stream for recording rather than the built-in recording option in rekordbox (= not allowed when streaming)).
I record my sets with Audacity or Quicktime, and when I listen to my set, a high pitched buzzing noise appears from the very beginning. This is really annoying and I don’t know how to solve this.

My DDJ FLX4 and iRig stream are both connected to my macbook as my main power source.

I’ve read something in the manual about input-monitoring but this was already turned of.

Here’s a link to a recorded set of mine, you can hear the sound from the very beginning.

Please don’t mind the mixing, I just started DJing.

Thank you in advance!

I bought an iRig once and it was one of the very few times I returned something.

The USB connection has plain, pure battery (5 volts) running from the computer up to run the USB microphone, or iRig electronics. The iRig sends digital voice data back down the same cable to the computer.

The problem happens when everybody cuts corners. The computer maker provides inexpensive but slightly sloppy 5 volts based on the iRig cleaning it up before use. The iRig depends on the computer providing clean, pure 5 Volts because it’s less expensive to let the computer do it. You are listening to what happens when the tall, powerful digital data signal leaks into the 5 volts and infects the microphone.

Can you try a heavier but shorter USB cable? One shortcut some makers try is a really long USB cable because it’s convenient for the performer. Anything longer than about 2M (6 feet) is too long and can generate problems like this.

Since this is a common and known problem, we have a filter for it. Screaming Mosquitos. I’ll see if I can find it. It works by removing all or most of the tones in the whine, so it might affect your voice. It also depends on the computer using normal USB connections.

Post back if you find the problem.

I don’t know where the actual software is yet.

This is the one I’ve been using.

Mosquito-Killer4.ny (363 Bytes)

It’s a nyquist program basically a bunch of notch filters at the right pitches.

Thank you Koz!
Shame that I cannot return my iRig stream. I’m trying to sell it but meanwhile I’ll try your suggestions.
Best,
Dries
