Help with "silence" function under the "Generate" heading

Is there a way to make the dropdown box with all the choices under “silence” automatically open to the same choice (without having to manually choose each time)?

I’m trying to edit a collection of about 100 mp3’s to all have a 1.8-second interval of dead silence, and every time I open the dialogue for “silence” (under Generate at the top menu), it will randomly pick one of the available choices, and not always the same one!

Am I doing something wrong? Here’s what I do:

  1. I open the folder with my mp3’s
  2. I choose the one I want to edit by right-clicking and I choose “Open With” > “Audacity”
  3. Audacity opens up with my chosen song
  4. I drop my curson on the spot right before the first audible note of the song, and sweep left to the beginning of the track
  5. I hit “Generate” at the top, and choose “silence”
  6. A box opens up. If you click the down arrow at the right of where it says “Duration”, you can see all the different formats you can pick from. I WANT IT TO ALWAYS OPEN TO “seconds + milliseconds”, but it usually (not always) opens to something else.

So…HOW THE HECK DO I MAKE IT DEFAULT TO “SECONDS + MILLISECONDS”?

Thanks for any advice

I think it has something to do with the job you’re asking it to do. It’s always a fresh new sound file and different duration.

I suspect I would create 1.8 second of silence on its own track. Then copy-paste that into the show as needed.

You may also be able to do that with a Macro / Chain / Batch file.

Worth checking.

That’s interesting - honestly, I hadn’t thought of that. Mostly because I was focusing on finding a way to create a default value to quickly apply. Actually, I did find a way to create a “user preset”, which I saved. Using that might be the closest I get to accomplishing what I want - although, making a macro might be the ultimate answer.
Thank you Koz!

hey. I was trying to perform a similar action and i’ve been trying to use the Macro Tool to generate silence at the end of a file after “slide stretch” and “compressor”. I can’t figure out how to do it without overwriting the whole file with silence. I’ve tried many “set cursor position” and “select” or “selection” commands and the solution eludes me. Please I hope you can help me.
