Help with mic interference in audio

Hello all. Hopefully you can help. I am new to audio/video recording/editing. Really just helping my daughter by being her cameraman for her project. Attached is sample of a longer interview she did. Which I must have touched the Rode MICME microphone plugged into the smartphone or it as not pushed in all the way. Either way there is that loud interference noise intermitted through the two interviews she did. I am trying but not successfully using 2.1.3 on Windows 10. I tried the noise removal but didn’t turn out. Is there anyway to save these files? Thanks in advance for any help.

I can’t listen because I’m at work, but “bad noise” often can’t be fixed. :frowning: …Someone else should be able to give you some more specific advice.

Pros still record in soundproof studios with good equipment and good mic placement. On-location movie dialog is re-recorded in the studio. On-the-scene news reports/interviews are close-mic’d, and there is usually some noise… sometimes objectionable levels of noise.

With low frequency or single-frequency noise (like power line hum), a high-pass or notch filter can help. And, sometimes you can experiment with equalization to bring-up the voice frequencies while reducing the noise frequencies. But, the voice requires most of the audible frequency range and most real-world noise also spans a wide frequency range.

“Noise Reduction” works best when you have a constant low-level background noise… It works best when you don’t really need it.

With video interviews sometimes the best solution is to turn-down the volume during the parts when the noise is distracting/annoying and add subtitles. (That assumes you can make-out what’s being said.)

For future reference, if something is critical and there’s no possibility of “take two”, have a back-up recorder recording in parallel. (That’s especially important if you’re using a computer for recording because computers are the least reliable things we own!) And, if it’s a critical interview, take notes.

That should be a BIG IMPROVEMENT over the non-directional mic built-into your phone or video camera (if it’s working correctly), but it’s not a substitute for close-micing and/or a soundproof studio (or at least a a quiet room/location).

P.S.

…by being her cameraman for her project.

As you probably know, Audacity is an audio editor. You can open the audio from an audio/video file, edit the audio and re-export the audio. You’ll need to use your video editing software to re-combine the audio & video.

I think the recording is trash.

Noise Reduction works on constant background noises, the operative word is “background.” The major sound in the supplied clip is the buzzing sound, not the dialog. Also as a minor point, Noise Reduction needs a segment of noise with no dialog as a Profile or sample. The clip is so damaged you can’t tell when the dialog stops.

If I had to guess at it, I’d say the microphone connection may be faulty. The processing inside the microphone is going nuts from starvation.

I have had troubles with microphones reacting with the radio connection of a smartphone, but the product information seems to insist it’s designed to do this.

Is there anything in the instructions about suspending the “phone” part of the unit during recording—such as setting it to Airplane Mode?

Koz

I wouldn’t be shocked if Airplane Mode was required. You can’t have notifications pop up in the middle of a shoot.
