Help with lost project

I worked on a project all day yesterday and it’s gone. There are some *.aupunsaved files but they won’t open. How can I recover my project without having to start over?
I signed up for the cloud saving and it’s not on there either

I can’t help but hopefully somebody can.

For future reference - It’s a good idea to export as WAV or FLAC immediately after recording, and periodically if you are doing lots of editing, etc. Regular audio files are “simpler” and more reliable than Audacity project files.

Then if it’s important or irreplicable make multiple backups, ideally in different locations just as you would with any important data.

Of course it’s OK to keep backups of your project files too.

…Personally, I’m usually working on “simple stuff” so I rarely make a project file.

I agree completely and I have been doling out the same advice to people I’ve talked to.

That must be really frustrating. Which version of Audacity do you use? Do you have a project file as well as the ‘unsaved’ files you mentioned? Is it very urgent, do you have a deadline to meet or anything?
Thanks.

Maybe try to make a copy of the .aupunsaved file, rename the .aupunsaved file to .aup, and try to load the renamed project file in Audacity
Just an assumption
