I have a xion USB turntable and some years ago previously used ezvinyl converter programme, but it is is 32 bit so will not work on my mac so bought Audacity. Watched video but cannot find same set up arrangements as on the video. Can anybody tell me step by step how to record as I cannot get it to mirror the video. Also want to hear music via speakers whilst recording. Would appreciate simple set up.
Audacity is FREE and open source…
Tutorial - Digitizing LPs, tapes or MiniDiscs
I may be as simple as plugging in the USB, starting Audacity, selecting the USB device as your Recording Device, and then clicking Record.
Then you can optionally edit/process and finally export as WAV or MP3, etc.
So you know how to connect the (analog) music equipment to your digital hardware, right? Nevertheless, please describe your connection and what equipment (if any) is between your turntable and your computer.
You bought Audacity? Audacity is free, if you paid something for it, you have been cheated…
Mh, the video could show anything from version 0.8 (in 2009) to version 3.6.4 (2004).
What does not work? If you could be more specific, it would help to help you…
Firstly many thanks for coming back to me. I am getting very frustrated especially as I remember how easy the ez was to do.
I have the same USB cable as before (some years ago) from the back of the turntable (square connector) linked into the rear of my mac
with regard to buying Audacity I was looking for programmes to convert the vinyl to digital and this was the favoured which I bought from Amazon - £7+
The record is playing and if I press the record button it opens a box under the timeline, but it doesn’t show any level of the recording, and I cannot hear anything. It does not give any indication that it is recording.
DVDDoug Thanks for coming back to me.
In the video I can see the guy selecting the recording device. BUT I cannot find any button or menu as to the what I am trying to record. In the video it came up with a list but I cannot get my programme to show this list to be able to select it.
I’m a Windows guy so I won’t be of much more help…
I don’t know what video you’re watching, but the videos on YouTube aren’t “official” and they aren’t necessarily kept up to date.
You should see the Audio Setup icon on the top menu bar and it should look like the link I gave.
It’s actually not illegal to sell open source software but you may not have the “real thing” The logo is trademarked so they can’t (legally) sell something “similar” with the same name or logo.
The current version is 3.7.0, available from the Official Audacity Website. (You can download it without signing-up with Muse.(
Audacity is free. You should report this to Amazon and get a refund. The person who sold this is a scammer.
You should trash the version you got from Amazon and download the official version.
The Audacity manual is here.
Make sure Audacity has permission to use the “microphone”
