Getting 9996 error recording computer audio

Hi there! New here, have used Audacity a bit for other recordings. I am trying to record audio from my computer, I followed instructions to for Audio Setup, setting host to Windows WASAPI and my recording device to my speakers marked loopback. When I hit record, I am getting a 9996 error for invalid device. I tried a couple of different audio sources (spotify, youtube in chrome) and I get the error no matter which. I also tried starting the audio before recording and starting with no audio currently playing, same error.

I updated, using version 3.7.0, have Windows 10. TIA for any help you can provide!

This might be a silly question, but the sound is coming out of the regular speakers, right? You’re not using a USB headset or something?

And just to be clear, you’re not recording audio from the computer. You’re recording internet production sound from your computer. How the sound got into the computer and how it got to your speakers or headphones has a lot to do with how to capture it. See: DVDDoug.

9996 is Invalid Device.

Each of the systems in your machine is a device and they can all be independent. You can have music playing on your laptop speakers and still have someone’s voice in your headphones.

It’s also possible for other software, apps, and services to scramble these systems. That’s why you can have trouble doing simple sound jobs after a Zoom call.

Audacity typically displays the 9996 error when the device settings are incorrect. It may be necessary to restart Audacity and your computer in order to reset the audio devices. Make sure that the correct output device (headphones or speakers) is selected as the loopback source in the Audio Setup. You should also check the audio driver settings and ensure that they are current. The issue may be resolved by reinstalling Audacity if any corrupted configurations are present.

Hi folks, thanks for the help! I got it to work, I changed from mono to stereo and that did it!
