Hi,
I record audio from my TV directly into Audacity and save as WAVs, then compress these WAV’s into FLACs to save space.
However, when the FLACs are decompressed or imported into Audacity, the levels are way higher than the original WAVs.
Why?
Thanx.

The FLAC file should be identical to the WAV file.
Please talk us through step by step how to reproduce this problem.

I plug a dual-RCA to mini-plug cable from my TV into my PC soundcard, record to around -12dB, then save as a WAV.
I listen to the WAV which is at an average volume level.
I then render the same recorded data in Audacity (which remains open with the recorded track still open) to FLAC.
I exit Audacity, then open a new Audacity session and import the FLAC file. The volume now is louder than the WAV (and
the blue waveform wider).
This also happens when the FLAC file is converted to WAV in the Super C app.

Check that you have not accidentally nudged the track gain slider - it should be at zero (centre) http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/audio_tracks.html#gain

Nothing has been ‘accidentally nudged’. I’m talking about an already processed file being reprocessed with a resultant that’s louder. There’s no user intervention involved.

OK, try this:
Exit Audacity if it is already open, and then launch Audacity.
From the Generate menu, generate a Tone. The default settings will produce a fairly loud “beep” that is 30 seconds long.
From the File menu, export as a WAV file.
From the File menu, export as a FLAC file (use a different file name)
Close Audacity, then re-launch Audacity.
From the File menu, select > Import > Audio and import both the WAV file and the FLAC file.
The two files should be identical.

Well that worked. Both files were identical. Could be a Gremlin in there somewhere. Thanx.
