I am 72 years of age, female, and my name is Lucy (like in Ricky Ricardo). Enough said. I have downloaded and installed Audacity 2.x on my Windows XP desktop. I have also downloaded the LAME and FFmpeg files. My problem: When I try to install the FFmpeg file, I receive a message the file is corrupted? I installed Audacity from the .exe installer. Thank you for looking.
Hi Lucy,
Clear the downloads list or cache in your web browser and and try again ( http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/#lamewindl ). There is a zip option to right of “FFmpeg_v0.6.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe” too.

Gale, thank you. I cleared the cache and downloaded the .zip version. When I click on the .exe file, a blank black dialogue box flashes on and off? Do I need to move the files to the program Audacity?
Lucy
I put the FFmpeg files I extracted into the Audacity folder and tried removing vocals. Wound up with no sound at all. Starting over once again.
I uninstalled Audacity and both Lame and FFmpeg files from my desktop, including Program file, Prefetch, cleared the cache.
I installed “audacity-win-2.0.1.exe” again. Did I tell you I have a way of making mountains out of molehills? I see a lot of mountains on the horizon!
Here’s my question: From the options below–which do I need to download? I am guessing numbers 2 and 3?

The zip has no exe. You would just extract the files if you used the zip.
Is removing vocals your main aim? Being able to do this depends entirely on the material you have in the first place. For help, see Audacity Manual .
You need LAME only if you want to export an MP3 file. You only need FFmpeg to import or export files in M4A, WMA or other additional formats. If you want to export WAV, you don’t need LAME or FFMpeg.
You only need the one LAME 3.99.3 (exe or zip), and only if you want to export MP3 files. if you use the exe, Audacity will detect the LAME library without further configuration from you.
If you want to import and export WMA and AAC, use FFmpeg_v0.6.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe. If you restart Audacity after using the FFmpeg exe installer , Audacity will detect FFmpeg automatically.

Actually, that’s what I did when I managed to remove the vocals from a song on my second try. But, I didn’t know how to save the song that could be used in other programs other than Audacity. Here comes my really dumb question (yes, there are dumb questions). I imported the song, followed the tutorial and and successfully removed the vocals. I know you import to bring a file in, do I export it to my computer to save? And, how? I know I can just find songs without words for embedding in my videos, but now my curiosity is up; I want to try a bit more. Thanks for your help and hoping you won’t give up on me.
The Vocal Removal and Isolation tutorial should at least give a link about how to export a file for use in other programs. I will add a link when the current release of 2.0.2 is over. You have to File > Export. See Audacity Manual .

Jimminy Crickits, got it to Export work. I downloaded FFmpeg zip file. I am not sure which option to use to unzip:
- Extract Files …
- Extract Here …
- Extract to aud-w-2.0.1
Will Audacity know where to look? I always scored lowest on reading comprehension tests–by the time I read the second paragraph, I forget what the first paragraph said. Somewhere I think I read that you only have to know it’s location once and after that you are set to go?
Also, I can still hear the vocals very faintly, but can work on that myself. Besides, I can invite my little bother for dinner and pick his brains. He is the one that gets me out of trouble when I download viruses. He seems to want me to try things on my own before he has to clean up my drive and give me an assist. He must think I am going to live forever…

Since you chose the “harder” zip option, you usually have to use Preferences to tell Audacity where FFmpeg is. But to make it simpler, quit Audacity and extract the FFmpeg files into the folder you run Audacity from. This is normally C:Program FilesAudacity.

You did well to only hear them faintly. “Removal” will not work on all vocals, as the tutorial explains.
Gale
Gale, success at last. I was able to remove the vocals completely from two of Keith Urban songs. Sounds lots better with the vocals, so I going to look for some rock and roll to fiddle around with. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
