FFmpeg library not compatible on 2.3.3?

 • I am on windows 7 with audacity build 2.3.3

 • I have ffmpeg-win-2.2.2 installed in the correct place and i have tried manually locating it within the program but it has automatically located it correctly.

.aac files still won’t open, i get:

without the optional ffmpeg library audacity cannot open this type of file.

Any ideas?

Does it show-up under Libraries?

It would seem so (see Screenshot)

Yes, that looks OK.

Try opening a WAV or MP3 file, and see if you can export it as M4A/AAC.

If that works FFmpeg is at least partially working and, maybe there’s something wrong with your AAC files. Try checking one of the files with MediaInfoOnline.

Thanks for the reply,

ok so i have 2 different .aac files that were extracted using ‘gMKVExtractGUI’.
The extension is .aac but the site reads them as this:

Format : ADTS
Format/Info : Audio Data Transport Stream
File size : 1.22 GiB
Overall bit rate mode : Variable

Does this mean i cannot edit them with audacity or is there a plugin for this?

I have the same problem here but unfortunately Audacity don’t add FFmpeg at all.

So any ideas how this can be solved? Reinstalling Audacity didn’t solve the problem.

Please note that Audacity 2.3.3 is a very old version. If anyone else has “the same problem”:

 1. Update to the current version of Audacity from: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/
 2. Follow the instructions in the manual to install FFmpeg: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#ffdown

Note that for Windows, the manual says to use the FFmpeg “EXE” installer rather than the ZIP version.

Note that for Windows, there is a 32-bit version of FFmpeg and a 64-bit version, and Audacity is available as 32-bit or 64-bit. Ensure that you download the version of FFmpeg that matches your version of Audacity.

If you follow these instructions and still have problems, start a new forum topic and ensure that you include:

 1. The exact version of Audacity you are using
 2. What operating system you are using
 3. The full and exact file name of the FFmpeg installer that you are trying to use
 4. Any other relevant information.
