Failed to read from a file in c: Suddenly not reading any project files

I am using latest version of Audacity, I have not made any changes on my PC ( Dell Inspiron 15), Audacity just suddenly would not load aup files that I previously had no problem with. Any idea?
I have used Audacity for years and never had this problem.

This may be a problem with the file (which became corrupted for any reason) or with your drive (which is may be dying).

But I am sure you have a recent backup of your work…

Eric,
If you click on the magnifying glass at the top of the forum page you can search for that specific error message. There are several instances of it. Maybe one will be the same cause as your issue.

AUP or AUP3?

The older AUP projects were an AUP file and a bunch of smaller AU files in a folder with the same name. If everything isn’t kept intact… If you move the AUP file without moving the whole folder, it won’t work.

The new AUP3 format is all in one file but it’s still more complex and (less robust) than a regular audio files like WAV. For that reason, I always recommend saving a WAV file immediately after recording whether you make an AUP3 project or not.

The AUP3 format also requires that you “work from” an NTFS or exFAT drive. (Your internal C drive is fine.) A FAT32 thumb drive won’t work and the cloud is not recommended. Thumb drives or the cloud are OK for back-up as long as you copy the file to your internal drive before opening in Audacity.

If it’s a critical project and there’s no possibility of “take-2” then keep multiple back-ups as you would with any critical data.

I havent moved any files around, Audacity just suddenly started having a problem loading projects, new and old. I cant open any of them now. Its a new Dell Inspiron laptop, not having any obvious problems with it. This just started happening. I have also uninstalled & reinstalled Audacity, same problem. As of now, I am not able to open any Audacity project files

Also not, when you make a short recording now, save the project, quit Audacity and afterwards try to open it again?

Thank you, I will try that.
Its not happening to all my project files as I thought earlier, it seems random, but looking closer for a pattern. It seems to be files I have opened & saved recently. The one I’m not able to open now, I created it last week, Saved & reloaded a few times successfully. Then yesterday would not open anymore.
I just remembered something that happened last time I saved & closed it, a message appeared that it was “Compacting” the project. That is something I don’t remember seeing before.
