(This is true for Windows. Now sure about other platforms.)
If I open Project 1, and export files, the directory selection dialog will default to the last directory exported to for any Audacity project. If I’m jumping between several projects, this gets annoying, as I’m constantly needing to change the export directory.
Ideally the last export directory would be stored within the project, and that could be used as the default when exporting.
The developers are currently rewriting the existing File Exporter and are considering various ideass. See:

Enhancement Request
minor feature
import-export
**Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.**
When using A… udacity as an "External editor" in other DAWs such as Ableton or even when using "Open With" in a file manager, it is always frustrating to have to choose Export and then go hunting for the original file that was opened.
**Describe the solution you'd like**
Keep track of the imported file (usually specified in commandline arguments, but could be nice to do the same with the Open dialog) format and location and have an "Export To {importedfile}" or "Overwrite {importedfile}" entry in the File menu. This is a pattern used in other programs such as glimpse/gimp.
**Describe alternatives you've considered**
It's a quality of life enhancement, it is possible to export to the file manually but it's less than ideal.
**Additional context**
Whilst audacity is considered a DAW in many respects and it is used a lot with it's own format files, as a wav file editor it is really good, and a lot of people just want to use it as that, so it'd be nice to accomodate that usage.

Enhancement Request
feature tweak
### Your idea
When I open a file for editing (Right click > Open with > Audacit… y, and not drag-and-drop, if that makes a difference), and then try to export the edited audio to a file, it would be better if the default export folder is the location of the opened file instead of the previously used folder, or fixed default location, which is currently the only alternative.
I'm using Audacity 3.3.2 on Windows 10.
### Problem to be solved
Implementing this change would allow users not to have to specify the export folder every time they use the app if they happen not to store all their audio files in a single folder, which appears to be the expectation for the current design.
### Prior art
The behavior I suggest is typical of most text and image editing programs I have used.
