every new track I edit opens another audacity window

to be honest, i hate the new audacity. i’ve been using 1.3 for years and liked it just the way it was. i wish it were still available. now, “start to cursor” has an annoying “track” in front of it making it harder to find at a glance for instance. i REALLY hate that annoying extra popup you have to close to save a track that you can’t opt out of too. both of these annoying features really slow using audacity down.

that isn’t the biggest problem though. every time i open a track, trim the silence off the beginning and end, fade in and out of the track and make volume adjustments as needed and save it, i get another instance of audacity opening up after i close the 1st track, hit open, delete the original and open a second track for editing. i looked at my task bar and saw i had 8 instances of audacity opened! i never had ANY of these problems with the older version.

how do i make audacity stay as just a single window? having to close each new instance for every new track is an unbearable annoyance that not only further slows me down, but if i forget what is happening out of site, eventually it will crash my PC when i have 30 audacitys running at once.

i tried keyword searching “multiple instances of audacity” & “audacity opens new windows” to no avail. if anyone knows how to make that new track data “interrupter pop-up” shut up forever too, that would be appreciated as well. i know there’s no way to get rid of that “track” label that obscures “start to cursor”. even better, just bring the old version back. that’s what i know and love. i don’t like audacity 2.

Please give your workflow steps 1,2,3… that explains the problem. Are you talking about SHIFT + J ?

Please give your workflow steps 1,2,3… that explains the problem. Are you talking about the warning when closing an empty project window? If so this was done because users pressed on the track then closed the project thinking the track had been “saved”. At your own risk, you can turn several warnings off in Warnings Preferences . If you mean Metadata Editor you can turn that off in Import / Export Preferences .

If you want to import a file into the same project, use FIle > Import > Audio. 1.3 series was just the same (FIle > Open opens the file in a new window) .

i will edit a stereo track then file > export it to the folder i’m saving tracks in.
file > open > delete the original track in it’s original folder and then open the next track in the list there
when i do that, audacity re-loads with the old window retaining the last track i edited’s name with a new window for the new track so i then have 2 audacity windows open and every new track creates a new window instead of just remaining in the original window like it should and 1.3 always did. i’m not opening the new windows, audacity is. maybe it’s some setting i was trying to make thinking i was doing something different trying to get rid of that new track data popup. i just want it to work the same way the audacity i’m familiar with did. i don’t like re-learning programs. i’d rather just get 1.3 again.

1.3 was exactly the same. File > Open opens a file in a new project window, if the current project has ever contained a track. That has not changed since at least Audacity 1.2.6.

I would recommend using FIle > Close straight after your export. This will:

  • Get rid of the track from which you exported the last file (you will be asked to confirm you don’t want to save changes)
  • Assuming you had not saved an Audacity project, clear Audacity’s temporary folder (so that you will not be in danger of running out of disk space)
  • Remove the old project window and its name, and start a fresh project with no name.

Now you can use File > Open to delete the now redundant file or folder and open the next file and you will have only one project window.

Alternatively, press on the top left of the track to delete it, then use File > Import > Audio to delete the old file/folder then import the new file into the same window. This is not so good because eventually you will run out of disk space until you File > Close.

Please tell us exactly what this popup says, then we can tell you if you can get rid of it.

I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!

i can no longer use the program for multitracking like i could with the original. if i send you $20 freakin’ dollars would you please send me a CD of the original audacity as i DESPISE this ruined “update”.

i just reloaded it from scratch hoping that useless productivity RUINING new window crap would go away, but it didn’t and it refuses to let me import a second track in the ONLY window i’m working in.

besides that, every new detestable PC crashing window that opens forgets the toolbar settings i made getting rid of the screen hogging, not that i can open multiple tracks in the window anymore anyways, officially BREAKING what wasn’t broken, nust like windows XP did 98, but that’s another issue.

hiding the EASY to spot “start to cursor” & “end to cursor” SUPERIOR labels is also busted by inserting the word “track” in front of both. it’s like you found every way possible to make the program more infuriatingly busted to use and STILL never fixed the original, program refuses to auto-snap the new track start position in zoom mode after deleting silence, but in a meaningless random spot nowhere near the edit, but i learned to live with that annoyance in the old version.

i want nothing to do with this one. the original program wasn’t perfect, but it was a nice audio editor that let you do basic audio editing with a few nice added features, but now it’s window clogging bloatware of the worst order, i need the program, and if i have to buy the original to toss this new time waster in the garbage, then so be it.

i DESPISE the “new and disproved” version.

It seems that you have made up your mind.

@1983 B-boy, if you stop being angry and tell us why you want 30 or so project windows open, instead of using File > Import Audio, and explain your other gripes in detail, we’ll be happy to consider them. But no-one understands what the problem is.

Has something changed where you don’t want to change the exact steps you took in 1.3 even though you can do the same thing in 2.x by changing your steps?

Simply not true if you use File > Import > Audio. If you find it hard to move the mouse there, hold CTRL and SHIFT on the keyboard, then press I (as in the first letter of “India”) then release all three keys.

Even if it was true, you can use FIle > Open and File > Close as I already explained.

That’s because it’s crashing, because you have too many windows open. Simply use File > Import > Audio if you want to import a new file into the same project.

2.x does remember toolbar positions, if it doesn’t crash.

Sorry but I don’t understand what you mean. Items five and six at Edit > Select do relate to the “Track”, not the project. Please explain more.

Why not calm down and give us exact steps 1,2,3,4, 5… to show us what you mean? I can guess the general sort of problem you mean, and there is a bug open to look at these sort of issues.

But I’d rather hear you say exactly what the issue was. If it’s the same in 1.3, describe it there instead.

Tell us what stops you using File > Import > Audio.

And as already explained, none of the window opening/closing behaviour has changed in 2.x, except that there is now no Preference to choose whether Audacity quits after closing the last window.

i tried several versions, 1.39 which might have made my PC crash or had spyware, 1.24. 1.1 and am working exactly the way i prefer. the toolbar is sparse with just the essentials and a smaller clock to clog the screen that will only re-appear every time you open anything no matter HOW you open it in 2.0. maximum screen, and no unwanted selection either toolbars. edit select… just 2-3 choices with start to cursor & cursor to end easy to spot at a glance.

the problem is you took the projects toolbar away. projects > open lets you do multitracks like 2.0 refuses as well as edit a track, save it to wherever, close the track, and just open a new one in the same window without that giant annoying clock wasting time getting it out of the way so you can zoom an audio track. that other toolbar is gone too… nice clean uncluttered, un-bloated get it done interface.

if i didn’t know better, i’d swear it edits faster too, at least it’s fast to work with. the only things wrong with it other than the option to delete the timecode bar and default to an audio track opening full screen without having to be dragged, and especially that it won’t snap to the start point of the edit you just made to the beginning of a track, but at least there’s an arrow button for that, it’s an almost perfect, easy to use program. 2.0 is ergonomic clutter in comparison. it doesn’t do anything more i’d want it to, and only adds crap i don’t want it to. that annoying track save popup dialogue is bogus too. save means save.

1.2.6------ project button, open or import whatever… simple superior interface.

Good, I’m pleased that you have found a version that you like.
