Error opening sound device.

I’m actually using Big Sur.
I just installed Audacity and FFmpeg. I’ve tried all the suggestions in the manual, but it still is not working.

What is not working? What are you trying to record from? What is the exact error message (including the error code number)?

FFmpeg has nothing to do with recording.

I’m just trying to play a sound.

Try recording something. The Mac system may ask you to give Audacity permission to use the microphone. Grant it. Then see if you can play back.

This is what happened.

I checked the the sampling rate as the error suggests, and this is was I saw.

Try setting the input to 16-bit integer both in Audacity and in Audio MIDI Setup.

no change

I should have asked right away: what version of Audacity are you running?

2.4.2

In this post https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/error-opening-sound-device/59932/5 you are looking at the recording device.

I assume that you are using “Built-in Output” for playback (?)
What are the settings for the “Built-in Output”?

As a test, please try removing “BlackHole” and the “Multi-Output device”.

I can’t easily remove BlackHole like I can the multi-output but pressing the minus sign, so I didn’t, but nothing changed when I removed the multi-output device.

Perhaps this is relevant. There’s nothing under “supported rates.”

To remove BlackHole, you will need to uninstall the BlackHole app.
I think it is quite likely that BlackHole is creating a conflict which is causing the problem, so I think you should definitely try removing it.

IF removing BlackHole fixes the problem, then it “may” be possible to reinstall BlackHole without reintroducing the problem - we can look into that if relevant.

I uninstalled it, but there was no change.

Are you able to play audio files with the Apple Music app?

Yes, all sound in other apps work.

Very strange.

Please open:
“Audacity menu > About Audacity”

Open the “Build Information” tab.

Scroll down to the bottom of the “Build Information” screen.

Take a screenshot and attach it to your reply.
