I have just installed Audacity 2.3.0 and am running Windows 10 Home. When I try to record I get “Error opening recording device” and I see that Audacity shows no recording devices - I’m guessing that the latter is what’s causing the error message. I’ve tried re-installing the software to no avail.

No. It won’t. Windows has a bit of a mine field you need to get through to make your microphone or interface work.
Close Audacity. Your microphone needs to appear and work in Windows before you do anything else.
This is Win7, but I understand the basic process is similar.
Right-click the speaker icon lower right.
Select Recording.
This illustration shows a sound connection and the little green thermometer bounces when you talk or sing.
That’s a good start.
I understand Win10 has provision for hiding microphones that have been naughty. I don’t know.

After you get that sorted, then open Audacity. Audacity checks for microphones and connections when it opens. You can also Transport > Rescan.
