Error code: -9986 Internal PortAudio error

A continuing frustration I have is to have to quit and restart Audacity every time I attempt to record after having left the program open. My recording capture device is the internal hard drive on the M2 Macbook Pro on which Audacity is installed.

I love this software, but this has been an enduring issue across every version of Audacity I have used across at least 5 years and on every MacOS version in that same period. This is not a fatal flaw, but it really is annoying. Surely someone can fix this!

Otherwise, I love Audacity and recommend it to everyone. Thanks for all you do and for hearing my rant.

Instead of restarting Audacity, try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices before attempting to record.

What is your input device?

This type is error is often due to the recording input device (for example a USB turntable or cassette deck) dropping the USB connection when it powers off. You can verify if this is the case by going to Apple (menu) > System Settings > Sound > Input to see if your input device is still listed there.
