I’m new to audacity.
I just need to fade a couple of audio clips. When I use the envelope tool on a clip that does not start at 0, the rendering of the compressed wave seems to be offset. See attached image.
Am I doing something wrong ?

You are not doing anything wrong. It’s a bug.
It seems that the bug only affects the track visuals (the envelope seems to play correctly even though it looks wrong). Nevertheless, I find it makes envelopes extremely awkward to use.
If you need to use envelopes in your projects, I’d suggest going back to an earlier version of Audacity until it is fixed.
I’ve logged the bug here: Incorrect waveform appearance when Envelope applied to clip offset from zero · Issue #6927 · audacity/audacity · GitHub
thank you. Installed previous version (3.5.1), and there it works as expected.
