In earlier versions I have always been able to drag files into the Audacity window. I am now only able to open files using the menu (Command O). I’m wondering whether it’s a bug in my software, an incompatibility, or if there’s a setting that I accidentally triggered somewhere. I recently upgraded both my OS and Audacity, so not sure where the problem is.

What kind of files specifically? You can also Right-Click > Open With, Control-Click > Open With and File > Import. So there’s no shortage of ways to open a sound file.

I can’t either, so it may be something that happened in Audacity 2.1.2.

It’s a bug in Audacity 2.1.2. It is fixed in the current development code so the fix will be in Audacity 2.1.3, which will hopefully be released very soon.
Until then, you can drag most audio file types to the Audacity icon in the Dock, which will do the same as File > Open… .

No, subsequent files dragged to the Dock will open in new project windows, as far as I know.
