Discarding undo/redo history when closing project

I am getting a pop up when I close a project in Audacity that says " Discarding undo/redo history". I’m not sure what it is, but it’s taking sometimes up to 20 minutes to complete before I can close Audacity. Is there something I can do to either speed it up, or disable the need to complete this task when closing a project?

Me either. I need to “disable” this unwanted (for me) feature.

@Dan33185

This odd behavior occurs after I updated Audacity from version 3.0.0 to 3.6.2 . So I decided to kill all preferences by deleting (on Windows)

%AppData%\Roaming\audacity

After restarting Audacity I need to reconfigure it’s preferences but afterwards the programm does not “redo/undo” anything when I close a project with Ctrl+W or on exit anymore.

Was hoping that would fix it, unfortunately it didn’t seem to make a difference. Thanks for the tip though, it was worth a try. Hoping this is a bug and not feature, it’s annoying to have to force Audacity to close through the task manager every time.

EDIT-Downgrading to 3.5.1 seems to fix it.

I’m not aware of this taking forever. The only guess I’d have for this is that maybe you were low on hard drive space? I’ll investigate if something’s broken in this direction.

No, I have over 600 GB of free space, so I know that’s not the issue.

Can you try with this build? Build Audacity · audacity/audacity@b17f978 · GitHub

It’s the Audacity 3.6.4 release candidate, which does fix a sorta similar bug - maybe it fixes yours as well? @Dan33185

audacity-win-3.6.4-x64-msvc2022 is the right artifact for windows, audacity-macos-3.6.4-universal for mac, audacity-linux-3.6.4-20.04 for linux (you need to have a Github account to be able to download them)

That definitely makes it quicker, basically a matter of seconds instead of 20 minutes. Looks like it’s been fixed in a future build then, appreciate it!

EDIT-Guess I spoke too soon, it looks like the issue is with 24-Bit files on my end at least.

that’s a very good hint on what to investigate, thank you! We’ll look at it early next week!

@Dan33185 and/or @LorDVictiM I cannot reproduce, even with 24-bit audio. Could you share a project file? Even better if you could create an issue, too: Issues · audacity/audacity · GitHub
Thanks!
