Logging into Audacity this morning, I got the notice there was a new update; which I installed before going to edit my files.
In the past, when I would highlight a section of a track that I wanted to delete, and when I did it would join the two sections back into a seamless track.
However, when I’m doing the exact same thing in the new version, it’s leaving a hard line, and it looks like there are “dips” at each point (rounded corners of each track at the cut, which look like micro fade-in and fade-out.").
I thought maybe this was just a new way for Audacity to show there was a cut made. But, when I listed to it, there’s a noticeable pop at the cut point.
Is this a bug, or is there some setting that I need to change in the new version to get it to perform as it previously did?
That can happen if you cut & splice in the middle of a wave. Try Select → At Zero Crossings.
With Stereo the left & right zero crossings may not be exactly in the same place so it may not be “perfect”.
Anther foolproof way to get a smooth transition is with a crossfade. You can make a short crossfade of a few milliseconds that’s not noticeable, or you can make it longer where you can hear the blend.
This is happening to me as well. I was just editing audio last week and it was acting as usual but today it splits the track every time I make a cut. Definitely from the new update and hoping it’s fixed or there’s a new setting I have to toggle on. I tried to just join the clips and it moved everything around.
I would strongly recommend NOT switching versions while working on a project. Recent versions of Audacity are not fully compatible with each other. If a new release has a bug that is critical to your project, it could damage the project beyond repair. Wait until all of your current projects are complete and safely exported before updating.
It could be either. Which version were you using before updating, and which version do you have now (after updating)?
Came here to complain about this as well. Editing an audiobook, and the separation of clips for each edit adds to the tedium.
Scoured for a new “Join Clips on Delete” preference or something but see none.
I hate this feature. Makes audiobook editing more difficult. IIR, there was an earlier version that had this feature, and then it was removed in the next iteration. I was delighted to see it go away, and very unhappy to have it return. If it is useful to someone under circumstances I don’t understand, then the ability to turn it off would be greatly appreciated!
Same issue is for me as well after updating to last version. Function Cut or Delete does the same thing, splitting the track. I installed v3.7.1 again so that i can edit properly.
The hard line when deleting was certainly briefly in play in a previous version and then it was quickly removed - hoping the same will happen this time. Joining the clips is also broke as you mentioned - rolling back now
