I seem to have many hundreds of .au files on my computer. I have no project that I need to keep. Can I delete the files? How can I find the directory they are in? I rarely save a project–any ideas about while there are so many files?
Yeppers. You can also delete all of the .aup files and all of the *_data folders, that is, if you have no need to keep any projects.

Typically the xyz.aup file and the xyz_data folder are in the same directory. The individual .au files are all contained within the _data folder under a number of randomly names sub-directories. I would just delete the _data folder.
