cut vs delete? Not defined in index or glossary

Probably one removes the selected region permanently from the file, and the other creates a copy of the selected region.
I think my intuitive response is the opposite of the way it works, I’m ending up with only that a little selected bit remaining, when what I want is to remove the selected portion.

What is the difference between cut and delete, as implemented in Audacity?

Cut removes the selection and adds it to the Audacity clipboard in case you want to paste it.

Delete only removes the selection.
