'Cut' button doesn't work and 'Cut' in Edit is missing

After highlighting a section of the wave form, I can’t cut or delete it, because the Cut button has no effect and Cut is absent from the Edit menu.
I am using MAc OS X 10.7.5. What’s wrong?!

The Cut menu option is in “Edit menu > Remove Audio or Labels > Cut” http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/edit_menu.html#cut
Note that playback must be stopped (not playing, recording or paused).

I am having the same problem. I have highlighted the clip I want to use and saved it as an Audacity file on my desktop. I can open it from there using Audacity, and only the edited clip plays. But I can’t cut the unwanted part off as the scissors and the “cut” option under “remove audio labels” are both greyed out.

I saved it as a WAV file using the import button as suggested, but it saved the entire track, not just the selected clip. I need to know how to save just the selected clip in a format I can email. Can anyone help?

Playback must be stopped (not playing, recording or paused).

I don’t think anyone suggested that.
“Import” does not save files, it “reads” files (imports them into the current project).

File menu > Export Selection.

Note that for MP3 export you will need to install LAME: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#lame
For WMA and some of the other fancy formats you will need to install FFMpeg: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#ffdown

For exporting in WAV, OGG, FLAC, AIFF formats you don’t need to install any additional software as these are open formats supported natively by Audacity.

Thank you. The downloads seem to have fixed it.
