Interesting error message! Before attempting Crossfade Tracks, I used Adjustable Fade on a track - does Crossfade rely on Adjustable? Was Crossfade “blocked” from setting the options on Adjustable because I had already set them via S-Curve In? Is this a bug, or a feature? And, what about Naomi?
Win
EDIT: When I clicked “OK”, it brought up the standard Crossfade Tracks box, and all worked normally. Using it a second time did not cause the error message to occur.
Yes “interesting” error message. The message is referring to setting in “Adjustable fade” and has nothing to do with “Crossfade Tracks”.
If you find that you are able to reproduce this behaviour, please do let us know how
Always a good request! Here’s how to reproduce this error:
Start Audacity (creating a new project), generate two tracks
Select a portion of one track, and apply “Adjustable Fade” - no error
Select a portion of two tracks, and apply “Crossfade Tracks” - error! “Could not update effect” (plus details). Click “OK”, and the options dialog for “Crossfade Tracks” appears, and the effect works as expected.
Similar Error:
Start Audacity (creating a new project), generate two tracks
Select a portion of the tracks, and apply “Crossfade Tracks” - no error
Select a portion of one of the tracks, and apply “Adjustable Fade” - error! “Could not update effect” (plus details). Click “OK”, and the options dialog for “Adjustable Fade” appears, and the effect works as expected.
Note the key element of Step One: This only happens after freshly starting Audacity. This error occurs once per “instance,” then both Adjustable and Crossfade work without error… sort of. Trying it again, it seemed to “remember” the cause error, even when exiting and restarting Audacity. (Exhaustive testing is hard!)
This might be important: I downloaded the Zip-file version of 2.1.1, and dropped those files on top of the previous installation. I’m sure I’ve exited Audacity multiple times, but I don’t think I’ve rebooted since then.
That worked - no more fade-related errors. Also, no more Saved Presets for various other effects so I put back my “broken” config files, and I’ll live with the error messages.
I sometimes see a message like that once per session and once per effect if I move from one version of Audacity to another previous version and back to the version I tried first. I’ve got a similar problem right now on Windows 7 in 2.1.1 release.
Did you or do you have more than one copy of any effects in the Effect Menu?
