Crash/Lock while recording [SOLVED]

Assus G78 i7, 8 or 16gb, Audacity 2.1.1, KDE 5, 1TB 2.5" disk

I seldom get more than 8-9 minutes worth of recording without a lockup or crash, sometimes to the sound of buzzing sounds. I’ve seen some reports related to USB so I make sure that no user app is running and that no peripheral is plugged-in while recording. What I did notice however is that each time I restart following such an upset I get invited to resume the former operation or dump everything and start all over. The disk is 1TB 2.5" so I wonder if the problem would rise from some continuous backing up or something similar i.e. the disk not being able to keep up? These are practice sessions so I need no backup whatsoever.

The reason I go past the typical 3-4 minute song length is that I start practice and record every attempt, I could do this for an hour before I either get fed up or hit upon the proverbial ‘that’s a wrap’. “Track-delete and restart” for each pass doesn’t turn me on that much and I could on average record 20 minutes as a minimum.

yes

Are there any other audio devices connected to the computer?

none, no other user apps either, nothing is connected to the laptop

What settings are you using in the device toolbar?

  • Alsa
  • mic icon: default, or HDA intel PCH: ALC269VB Analog (hw 0:0)
  • mono
  • speaker icon: default

I’ll be happy to answer any other questions seeing that I do all my recording with Audacity

NB. pulse is surely running, in this case I’m NOT using jack (for all I know it may be running even when I do)

sorry, forgot this:

the guitar is connected into the 1/8" mic jack

and IT routs as follows

guitar > Boss-Me80 > Philo-Rock sustainer > Mackie802-VLZ3 mixer > laptop

the headphone is connected to the laptop 1/8" headphone jack

Try setting both the recording and playback devices in the device toolbar to the “hw 0:0” option.
This method can usually only be used when Audacity is the only audio app running, but it bypasses PulseAudio and is generally more stable both for playback and recording.

That worked, no more hung recordings, except once when I hit the stop button.

actually i had another unrelated problem with ‘noisy sound’ but fixed that by deleting the entire .audacity folder after which it self resolved

thanks
