Crash convrting some m4a files with a macro

got the same issue since with a macro converting m4a to mp3 that I used dozens of times before rel. 3.2.0

The crash does appear only on certain of the m4a files, but I couldn’t find a common denominator that makes the audacity 3.2.0, to 3.2.2 crash.

Also, the crash report always FAILES to send when click SEND REPORT. Therefore here the data (shortened) in copy:

still got the same errors since 3.2.0 … on macro reading multiple files >50 or so apparently MISSreading the folder names, while the macro perfectly works fine on a single or a few files:

The folder names appear in scribble like Japanese writing. see attm.
(apparently, dropping or pasting an image doesn’t seem to work in here)

Also, a simple button under every comment, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM would be a great feature !

The hierarchy and structure of this forum is 40 years outdated !!! …have a look at MS forums PLEASE !

My guess is that the files are named using a non-standard character set. I’ve experienced similar problems with some files downloaded from the Internet.

Try manually renaming the problem files using Microsoft’s file naming conventions: Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn

However, I still got the same issue after renaming etc. etc. as you also suggested.

Interestingly enough is that I can open the same files (ie. webm, m3a, mp3 any) and have the same macro running WITHOUT export at the end. And then EXPORT to mp3 manually and it works fine WITHOUT CRASH ! ??? … I let here the latest crash report as an attachment as the SEND icon does never work below the CRASH messages.

I see you’ve updated to Audacity 3.4.2. Does the problem only occur in this version, or does it also occur in Audacity 3.2?

no, it’s still the same since 3.2.0 … as stated in my first msg.
Also the same macro worked fine (on the exact same music files) in versions before the 64bit Audacity.
Also, the issue appears random and can happen on any type of music file within a given list of files that the macro works through, all within the same folder(s) one for import and “macro output” for export. In general the issue appears only on 1-2 files within a batch of 20-50 files that this rather simple macro for normalization works on:

Yes, and also with any of these music files (m3a, webm, mp3) that made the above specified Macro crash I could reproduce the crash. This, also, when choosing ONE file only for running the macro.
I tried to find the culprit within the files, but could not detect any difference from other files that ran seamlessly within the same batch: ie.

a) Character set used for naming tagging - renaming or deleting all properties - no effect!
b) size of file or recording features: typically 44.100kHz; 128 kb/s

The only difference I noticed after Ver. 3.2.0 (after change from 32b to 64b Audacity) using the exact same macro on the exact same list of files was:

a) the macro ran 4x faster and the crash appears to happen only with the last command “Export file to mp3”.

given the many Win10-Prof.64b- and Audacity-updates since these last 2 years using 2 pretty robust PCs:
a) MSI, i5-2500k, 8Gb, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB) and the fact that the crash is reproducible also on another
b) Thinkstation 20-server; Win10-home,64b, Xeon-W3550, 8Gb; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti)
- The Mem. are different brands and sizes, and were both fully tested in boot up.

Within this background, I got the idea that there might be a memory stack or a timing issue with the 64bit versions of Audacity ?

Do you have a small file that causes the crash that you could make available for testing purposes?

Thx indeed, Steve, for your patience ! Due to a major HW upgrade to i7 and 16Gb I was unable to answer earlier. Now with a clean, new, installed Win10Pro64-22H2-19045.3996 and diff. HW the same error occurred again, but with a different twist:

In a list of 15 m4a files I present to the same macro, the Audacity crashes on the very first file. I was expecting a crash on non US-keys like Ismaïla, ROSALÍA, etc. but NONE of this caused a crash. In fact the strange thing to make the crashing disappear entirely on the same list of m4a files was as follows:

Instead of simply marking all files in the “files” explorer window of “Manage Macros” I changed the list of files to ORDER alphabetically instead of formerly being ordered by “date”. This simple change alone made the macro run smoothly.

I do hope this sticking issue is solved.
