Could Not Decode File error

I was recording voice work on Audacity when my computer decided to crash and then update. And upon restarting and opening Audacity my files were seemingly okay for a minute as I attempted to save them. But 50 seconds in to a 55 second save Audacity would crash. I tried this 2 times and then after that it started to give me a couple different errors, including Error on line 1. This is the most recent one.

I use windows 10 and Audacity v. 2.2.2

Not enough information to determine the cause, but that project is irrecoverably damaged.

For future work, I’d suggest that you use the current 2.3.2 version of Audacity, which is available via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/

A couple of tips to avoid losing work:

  1. When working with Audacity, ensure that the computer “power saving” settings are turned off. Audacity projects have a very large amount of temporary data which in some cases may be lost or corrupted if the system goes to sleep.

  2. After making a recording, Export a backup WAV file of the recording before doing anything else. In the event of a fatal crash, then at least you will have a backup of the raw recording.

  3. Ensure that your system is kept up to date. Windows has a nasty habit of updating and forcing a reboot at the most inconvenient times.

I never allow auto update. I make the system notify me, I carefully save all my work and then do the update.
