Hi. I am trying to convert a file from Dragon Naturally Speaking, a .dra file, to an mp3. I have had multiple people tell me they’ve used Audacity to do this, but when I try to either open or import the .dra file into Audacity, I get an error message that it’s an incorrect file type. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Do you have the Dragon application? (I don’t.)
Apparently, you can play the audio from the DRA file, and then you can Record whatever is playing on your computer. Then export as MP3 or WAV, etc.
Or you can create a text file, use Microsoft Text To Speech to read the text and record that. Of course it won’t be the original voice.
Or, it looks like you can open the text from the DRA file with Microsoft Word (or other application) and again use Text To Speech.
It’s been like over a decade since I’ve used Dragon, so the technology has probably evolved. The last time I did use it though, I had to export the dragon file to WAV format using the Dragon software. Then I could manipulate it as an audio file.
So the reason I need to do it is I’m taking the certification test to become a court reporter using voice. They make you submit the recording of your voice transcribing the test as an mp3 file. I only have four minutes after completing the test to submit the mp3 file. You’re only allowed to have your transcription software and an audio conversion software open, and the FAQ about the test specifically mentions Audacity as the example of the conversion software. A person that has already been certified told me they and everyone they knew also used Audacity, but they didn’t respond when I asked them for specifics on how they did it.
Possibly they were recording “normally” with Audacity.
