Configuring Audacity for Microsoft Windows

I am just begining to use Audacity and am having trouble getting going. I have Windows Vista OS on my PC and Audacity 2.0.

From the Operating Instructions manual, I am “Configuring Audacity for Microsoft Windows”. From the section "Audacity Preference Settings, I have selected Edit; then, Preferences; then, Devices. The choices that come up for “Device” below Playback and Recording are different than those in the manual. Please advise which choices I should make.

“Device” below Playback: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output

: Speakers (Realtek High Definiti

: Realtek Digital Output (Realtek

“Device” below Recording: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input

: Microphone (Realtek High Definiti

: Line In (Realtek Highj Definitio

Thank you for your assistance.

Audacity comes in three numbers. The current version is 2.0.6. If you really have Audacity 2.0.0, that is a really old version and you should be installing the correct version from here:

You forgot to say what device you have whose operating instructions you are looking at. Make and model numbers are good.

If it’s a USB turntable or a USB cassette recorder, I suggest you look at Recording with USB turntables or USB cassette decks - Audacity Manual.

Audacity won’t see a new external device like a USB turntable if you plug it in after starting Audacity. The information you quote does not show any external devices, so try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar at the top.

Yes, I do have Audacity 2.0.0 which came with the NEXXTECH Model 10A13 USB Digital Cassette Converter that I purchased.
Thank you for the advice. I will instal the latest version and I will look at “Recording with USB Turntables or USB Cassette Decks” - Audacity Manual.
Thank you all for your help and I will let you know how it’s working when I get a chance to try it out.
